LCW and the Great Commission by Chinelle Flood
Who do you say I am? Jesus posed this question to his disciples one day after asking what others said about him. The answers varied from a former prophet to a resurrected locust-eater. Not all the answers were wrong per se. He was a prophet, and he was certainly a good teacher, but He was also so much more. But we know that Peter got it spot on, and he should have gotten it right. After all, he had been traveling with Jesus for over three years and was in very close contact.
Who is LCW? What would you say? Most would say a child sponsorship program, and though that is true, LCW is so much more than that. Now, I’m not comparing apples to apples (LCW and Jesus), but as a simple example. I came to LCW in June of 2025 and like many, thought that it was a child sponsorship program. I quickly came to understand that the lengths, widths, and depths of her were far greater than I could grasp from a web page or a social media post. In November of 2025 I had the honor of traveling to LCW, Philippines and the dimensions only increased from there.
After spending two weeks in the Philippines and working very hard to immerse myself in every inch of her square footage (though I didn’t fully accomplish it), I left with the realization that LCP is a biblical fulfillment of the Great Commission in her own way. Everyone uses different bait for fishing. Ours begins with a child. I didn’t come to LCW when it began forty years ago. I came here less than a year ago and I’ve had the privilege of hearing the stories of her beginning; a retired couple & siblings who knew that God wasn’t finished with them and a few boys living under a box. But that family had a vision and a dream to leave a legacy. I didn’t have to sit down and interview the founders to find that out. You can feel it in the air on a Sunday morning at the LCP campus with hundreds of people scurrying to their respective classes. You can hear it in the voices singing in each community the moment you get out of the car as they welcome you to their bible study. It’s in the sweet, retired ladies who volunteer their time to put together food packages or play with the kids living at the shelters. It’s on stage when a college graduate shakes a hand, poses for a photo and receives their degree. Legacy. The precious Gospel being passed to a child, a child to a family, a family to a community, a community to a city, and beyond.
The Great Commission of discipleship is all about legacy. Passing on what we have been given and staying true to what we have received. If you are sponsoring a child, I hope you know that you are reaching far deeper than one life. You are participating in the legacy through lending a helping hand.
