Education
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. From early childhood to college, our programs are designed to meet children and youth where they are: whether it’s preparing four-year-olds in our preschools for a successful start in public school, helping out-of-school children catch up through our School on Wheels initiative, or supporting young adults with college and vocational scholarships. Each program not only nurtures academic growth but also provides essential support, such as daily meals and service opportunities, ensuring every student has the tools to thrive.
Preschool
Preschool is the key to a solid educational foundation. Little Children of the Philippines operates seven preschools in the most disadvantaged communities, helping 3- to 5-year-olds prepare for formal school. The goal is to ensure that the children will be able to participate in primary school tasks more quickly and successfully. This leads to less absenteeism and better grades. Part-time teachers come from the community and are supported by the parents. An average of 125 children are enrolled each year.
School on Wheels
The School on Wheels (SOW) program was established to provide street children with an opportunity to get back into full-time education. The process starts by bringing out-of-school children to Little Children of the Philippines four mornings a week, over one school year. They are introduced to a regimen of caring, learning, and fun, including breakfast and lunch. When funds are available, those who excel become a part of the SOW In-School Program. These children are given a school uniform, school supplies, shoes, and a support network that encourages attendance at school, offers support when they are struggling, and provides a weekly rice allowance. LCW is committed to giving these children every opportunity to progress and graduate from high school.
College Work Scholarship Program
Many jobs in the Philippines are available only to those holding college degrees, such as luggage porters at the airport, bellhops at hotels, and cooks and servers at fast food restaurants. Those who do not attend college continue to live on the margin of survival, struggling to make a daily living through labor with no regular hours and low pay. Therefore, a college education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty for generations to come. The LCP College Work Scholarship Program offers a hand-up that assists with tuition, school supplies, projects, transportation, and uniforms. In exchange for the scholarship, the students give 20 hours per month of “Service with a Purpose (SWAP)”. Students are assigned to different offices at LCP to perform tasks that assist staff in the administration of our programs. The scholar is also required to attend the Youth Organization’s weekly Sunday School, Worship, and Saturday Bible Study. Additionally, they can choose to participate in the Door-to-Door Evangelism Team, Drama Team, Youth Choir, Praise & Worship Team, or serve as a Sunday School Teacher. All these activities provide opportunities to develop their talents and gain self-confidence in their abilities.
